History of Pompeii
From today's perspective, this catastrophe is a stroke of luck for archaeology. Because the volcanic eruption preserved everyday Roman life in both cities like a chronologically unadulterated snapshot for posterity.

In ancient times, Pompeii was considered a prosperous city. Located on a small plateau about ten kilometers south of Mount Vesuvius, the residents had a charming view of the Gulf of Naples. The river Sarno flows into the sea at the gates of the fortress-like city wall.

A busy port had developed here, with ships from Greece, Spain, North Africa and the Middle East calling regularly. Papyrus, spices, dried fruit and ceramics were exchanged for wine, grain and the well-known, expensive fish sauce Garum from the region.

Pompeii extended over an area of about 60 hectares. The streets formed the typical ancient grid. The entire city was surrounded by a wall with eight gates and eleven watchtowers. In addition to safety, a lot of emphasis was placed on luxury.

A theater and the Stabian baths provided amusement for the richer citizens. A basilica (Roman magnificent hall) served both as a stock exchange and as a court of law. Not far from there was the forum (central square of a city in antiquity) with the Jupiter temple. A large sports facility was surrounded by columned halls and shady plane trees, and a swimming pool promised the athletes to cool off.

However, most of the inhabitants of Pompeii lived in cramped conditions. Most of them lived in a one- or two-room apartment above a shop. Since there was neither a stove nor running water, people bought their food in a public cookshop, a kind of snack bar in antiquity. Water was fetched from public fountains that were found on every street corner.

But there were also numerous wealthy citizens in Pompeii. This is documented by excavations of larger houses and palaces. An example is the house of the Vettiers. It is fully excavated today. The two merchants Vettius Restitutus and Aulus Vettius Convivus must have spent a huge sum on the decoration, even by today's standards.

The building is divided into two halves and is connected by a garden with a covered portico - a so-called Perystil. But the paintings impress more than the architecture. They mainly date from the time after the great earthquake that shook the region in 62 AD and form a picture gallery - in ancient times the room in the house in which panel paintings were kept.
There were numerous warning signs. Nevertheless, the eruption of Vesuvius on August 24, 79 AD came as a surprise to many. Black smoke drifted toward the city, the sky darkened, and ash and pumice began to rain. Panic spread. Some fled, others took shelter in their homes. About a third of the population died in this eruption. People suffocated or were killed by falling rocks.

The second eruption the next day was even more devastating. Masses of lava poured into the houses and there was little escape. Most of the victims were killed in the second eruption on August 25. About 2000 of the 20,000 inhabitants were later found. The scientists therefore assume that many people were still able to flee and thus survive. But the city was buried and was forgotten for centuries.

Church of Pompei

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary (Santuario della Beata Vergine del Rosario) is a Roman Catholic Marian pilgrimage church in Pompei, in the Italian metropolitan city of Naples. The neo-baroque domed basilica was built in 1878-1891 on the initiative of Blessed Bartolo Longo in honor of the Queen of the Rosary and was significantly expanded in 1934-1939. It holds 6000 believers. The Marian Sanctuary is the cathedral of the Territorial Prelature of Pompeii and has the rank of a papal basilica.

Bartolo Longo (1841-1926), a lawyer and heir to a large fortune, after his religious conversion, made it his goal to promote the rosary. For his Rosary Church planned in the valley of Pompeii, he was given a picture of the Mother of God with the Child giving the rosary to two saints. The unsightly and neglected image, which did not please Longo, was soon credited with a first miraculous healing, followed by others, and became a pilgrimage destination. Longo and the Neapolitan noblewoman Mariana di Fusco, whom he married in 1885, made the construction of the pilgrimage church possible with their endowments in addition to important works of Caritas. The single-nave church on a cruciform plan was completed in 1891 and, due to the large number of worshipers, was expanded in 1934 to include two aisles with chapels and an ambulatory.[1] Pope John Paul II visited the shrine in 1979 and 2003, Pope Benedict XVI. 2008
